SCITUATE, R.I., June 16, 2026 – The Scituate School Department proudly announced that sixth-grade English teacher Christine McCarthy has been selected as the Scituate District Teacher of the Year, recognizing her decades of dedication to students, excellence in the classroom, and commitment to the Scituate school community. McCarthy was surprised with the honor during a middle school assembly held in the high school auditorium on Wednesday, June 10.
“Christy McCarthy has created a classroom environment where students feel welcomed, supported, and challenged to do their best,” said Morel. “She brings energy, kindness, and passion to her work every day and truly believes in her students. She works tirelessly for her colleagues and makes Scituate Middle School a better place to be by simply being here.”
McCarthy was nominated for this honor by her longtime colleague, Scituate Middle School Teacher John Barnes, who praised her for her devoted service as an educator.
“Christine is incredibly deserving of this honor. She is the first to arrive in the morning, and she is the last one to leave each day,” said Barnes. “She comes in early to prep her classes and opens her doors to any student who arrives at school early so that students have a comfortable place to get work done in the morning.”
The Rhode Island Department of Education District Teacher of the Year program recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in teaching, leadership among their peers, and meaningful contributions to their school communities. Each Rhode Island school district selects one educator annually to serve as its District Teacher of the Year.
“Today was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate an educator who means so much to this school community,” said Acting Assistant Superintendent Linda Savastano. “The excitement and genuine appreciation from students and staff show that she has made a lasting impact throughout her time at Scituate. We are all so grateful that she is here, and so blessed because she is here.”
The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from students and staff, many of whom have experienced firsthand the positive influence McCarthy has had on the school community throughout her time at Scituate.
